Energy provider SolarSaver has successfully implemented a solar energy system at the Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch and the African Pride Hotel, both located within the prestigious Melrose Arch precinct in Gauteng.
Innovative Pergola Structures for Limited Roof Space:
In response to the challenge of limited roof space for solar panels, SolarSaver collaborated with property developer Amdec Group to devise a creative solution. This involved utilizing purpose-built pergola structures above the roof of each hotel to accommodate the solar panels.
The 1,231 kW solar system, commissioned in October last year, has enabled the hotels to achieve substantial operational cost reductions through lower electricity bills while simultaneously decreasing their carbon footprints.
Tailored Solar Solutions for Client Needs:
Lance Green, SolarSaver’s sales head, emphasized their commitment to providing customized solar solutions that address clients’ unique requirements. The innovative use of pergola structures at Melrose Arch exemplifies their ability to overcome space constraints while preserving the aesthetic appeal of outdoor spaces.
This solar project aligns seamlessly with the broader sustainability objectives of both the Marriott Hotel group and the Amdec Group, solidifying their leadership in environmental responsibility within the hospitality and commercial sectors.
Comprehensive Sustainability Efforts:
The Marriott Hotel group’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond solar power. They employ various measures such as refuse recycling, energy-efficient appliances, water-saving devices, building management systems, and a centralized district cooling facility to conserve natural resources.
The latest solar installations augment SolarSaver’s existing portfolio within Melrose Arch, which now comprises 16 systems with a total capacity of 3,281 kW.
Rent-to-Own Model for Client Benefit:
SolarSaver manages these installations through a rent-to-own model, retaining ownership and responsibility for operation and maintenance. Clients in Melrose Arch benefit from a 20-year power purchase agreement, paying exclusively for the clean energy generated.
Green highlighted the success of these projects as a testament to SolarSaver’s innovative approach to addressing challenges related to space limitations and aesthetics. The company continues to drive the adoption of renewable energy across South Africa.
Addressing Energy Challenges and Promoting Sustainability:
Green emphasized the increasing significance of energy efficiency and reliable power supply for businesses in South Africa, given the growing energy demand, grid unreliability, and escalating costs. He asserted that, with abundant sunshine, South African businesses can readily achieve parity with the most energy-efficient and environmentally conscious buildings worldwide.
