SSE’s wind farm project at Aberarder in the Scottish Highlands has officially commenced construction.
Project Details and Capacity
The 50 MW project, located in Strathnairn near Inverness, will consist of 12 Vestas turbines.
Investment and Timeline
SSE made the final investment decision on the Aberarder wind farm in May 2024, investing approximately £100 million. The project is scheduled to be completed by late 2026.
Renewable Energy Generation and Environmental Impact
Upon completion, the wind farm will have the capacity to generate enough green energy to power nearly 60,000 homes annually. It is also projected to displace around 30,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions during its first year of operation.
Government Support and Location
In September 2023, the Aberarder project was successful in the UK’s fifth Contract for Difference (CfD) allocation round, securing a 15-year contract for low-carbon power generation.
