Exclusive Agreement to Utilize Sungrow’s PowerTitan Liquid Cooling Storage System
Sungrow, a global leader in PV inverter and energy storage systems, has entered into an exclusive agreement with Atlas Renewable Energy, Latin America’s largest and fastest-growing independent renewable energy producer.
The collaboration centers on the utilization of Sungrow’s cutting-edge PowerTitan liquid cooling storage system for the 200 MW/880 MWh BESS del Desierto project. This initiative aims to significantly reduce curtailment in Northern Chile, bolster regional energy reliability, and contribute to the nation’s goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2050.
Addressing Curtailment Challenges in the Atacama Desert
BESS del Desierto, located in the challenging Atacama Desert, faces the unique issue of abundant solar energy that cannot be fully transmitted to the main power consumption area 1500 km away due to grid load capacity constraints.
Atlas Renewable Energy’s solution is to construct Chile’s largest standalone energy storage plant, capable of capturing excess solar power during daylight hours and seamlessly integrating it into the grid when load capacity allows.
This innovative approach is expected to enhance regional power consumption flexibility and sustainability, with Atlas projecting an additional 280 GWh of electricity annually, effectively mitigating curtailment challenges in Chile.
PowerTitan’s Resilience in Harsh Desert Conditions
The Atacama Desert’s harsh environment, characterized by heavy dust and extreme temperature fluctuations exceeding 30°C, necessitates robust energy storage solutions.
Sungrow’s PowerTitan addresses this challenge with C5 corrosion resistance, IP65 protection against wind and sand, intelligent liquid cooling, and a smart operation and maintenance (O&M) system, ensuring optimal temperature control and long-term stability.
Advanced Grid-Forming Technology for Grid Stability
Sungrow’s utilization of advanced grid-forming technology enables milli-second-level active and reactive power responses, frequency modulation, voltage regulation, and harmonic suppression.
This capability not only stabilizes power grids but also actively strengthens the local grid, effectively addressing the challenges associated with long-distance and complex grid dispatch. As a result, Chile benefits from a more reliable and stable energy supply.
A Strategic Milestone for Atlas Renewable Energy
Patrick Valentin, Head of Strategic Sourcing at Atlas Renewable Energy, emphasized the significance of this partnership. BESS del Desierto, Atlas’s inaugural energy storage station, represents a crucial milestone in their expansion into the energy storage sector.
The collaboration with Sungrow is seen as a strategic move to harness solar energy resources effectively and enhance energy reliability across Latin America.
