Tesla Batteries Light Up Ukraine Amidst Blackouts

Tesla batteries are emerging as a lifeline for Ukrainians grappling with widespread power outages caused by Russia’s relentless attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.

Oleksandr Bentsa, the proprietor of Ukrainian Autonomous Systems, recognized the potential of salvaging batteries from damaged Tesla vehicles to provide electricity to homes and businesses in Ukraine.

Previously, Bentsa was involved in importing wrecked electric vehicles from North America, which were then restored and resold.

However, in the spring, he pivoted his focus to repurposing Tesla batteries as an alternative power source.

This shift in focus was prompted by the rolling blackouts that have plagued Ukraine due to Russia’s significant damage to the country’s power generation capabilities.

These blackouts leave many households and businesses without electricity for extended periods, sometimes up to 20 hours a day.

Bentsa explained to the Financial Times that an old Tesla, including shipping costs, can be acquired for around $10,000 and converted into 12 batteries, with the remaining parts also being sold.

These repurposed batteries have a capacity of 5kWh, sufficient to power a typical Kyiv apartment for about 10 hours with certain limitations.

While they can support lights and some electrical appliances, they might not be enough to run energy-intensive electric heaters.

Currently, Bentsa sells the 5kWh Tesla batteries to the Ukrainian army at a loss, but he also receives inquiries from civilian customers interested in purchasing them.

The demand for these salvaged batteries has surged as winter approaches, and Bentsa anticipates this demand to intensify further.
