Tesla’s Cybertruck: A Triumph Over Skepticism and a Best-Seller

Tesla’s Cybertruck has officially secured its position as the top-selling electric pickup truck in the US during the second quarter, achieving a remarkable production ramp-up in Tesla’s history.

Following its initial deliveries in November of the previous year, the Cybertruck sold an impressive 8,755 units in the US during Q2.

This surpassed the sales figures of the Ford F-150 Lightning (7,902 units), Rivian R1T (3,261 units), Hummer EV (2,929 units), and Chevrolet Silverado EV (2,196 units).

Notably, the Cybertruck also claims the title of the best-selling vehicle overall among those priced above $100,000.

The Cybertruck’s success has been further amplified by numerous celebrities showcasing their vehicles, including Jay Z, Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Pharrell Williams, Spike Lee, and many others.

In the past, critics questioned the Cybertruck’s potential, expressing doubts about its production feasibility, scalability, and popularity.

Notable figures like Road and Track editor Matt Farah and The Truth About Cars writer Tim Healey predicted the Cybertruck’s failure. However, Tesla has once again defied skepticism and emerged victorious.

Despite its overall triumph, the Cybertruck’s journey hasn’t been entirely smooth. In April, Tesla issued a recall for all 3,878 Cybertrucks produced up to that point due to a slipping accelerator pedal cover.

This issue was attributed to an unapproved lubricant used during the production process. In June, another recall affected 11,688 Cybertrucks due to faulty windshield wiper motors caused by excessive current applied during testing.

Tesla has introduced several innovative technologies in the Cybertruck. It is the first production vehicle to feature a 48V low-voltage system, a concept that automakers have contemplated for decades. Tesla even shared a manual with other manufacturers on designing such vehicles.

Additionally, the Cybertruck boasts the first production steer-by-wire system, allowing for variable steering ratios that enhance maneuverability. It is also Tesla’s first vehicle with bidirectional charging, an 800V high-voltage battery pack, and the largest gigacastings ever used in a Tesla.

Further innovations include cold-rolled stainless steel body panels and the “Cybercell,” representing the latest generation of Tesla’s 4680 battery cell. The production of these cells has outpaced the Cybertruck’s production ramp and recently reached a milestone of 50 million cells produced.
