Seismic services provider TGS has delivered extensive 2D and 3D seismic data for hydrocarbon exploration in Africa in recent years.
Agreement with Mauritanian Ministry
Following an agreement with Mauritania’s Ministry of Petroleum, Mines, and Energy, TGS announced on Monday, July 22nd, that it will undertake work to enhance the available data on the country’s hydrocarbon potential.
Multi-Client Seismic Data
These operations involve the provision of additional multi-client seismic data based on approximately ten 3D seismic surveys, which are expected to significantly expand TGS’ onshore and offshore data coverage in Mauritania.
Comprehensive Data Coverage
Overall, the operations are expected to encompass approximately 84,000 km² of 3D surveys from relinquished offshore blocks, onshore and offshore wells, and roughly 20,000 linear kilometers of onshore 2D seismic data covering the Taoudeni Basin.
Strategic Insights into Subsurface Potential
According to David Hajovsky, TGS Vice President of Multi-Client Data, this project is strategic in providing “comprehensive subsurface information, linking drilled prospects to under-explored regions such as deep waters.”
Mauritania’s Hydrocarbon Potential
As a reminder, Mauritania has been producing hydrocarbons since 2006, thanks to the Chinguetti oil field, whose production has rapidly declined to less than 5,000 b/d in 2023. However, analyses suggest the presence of significant offshore potential.
