Africa’s Green Hydrogen Boom: 10 Major Projects to Watch

Africa, with its rich renewable energy resources and increasing global demand for sustainable solutions, is emerging as a pivotal player in the green hydrogen market. The continent is on the brink of experiencing a surge in hydrogen projects set to be developed by the end of the decade.

In Egypt, the ACME Group Sokhna Hydrogen Project Phase 2 is gearing up with a capacity of 2,100 ktpa, aiming to commence operations in 2030. This ambitious venture involves key stakeholders such as energy company ACME Cleantech Solutions, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, Egypt’s state-owned New and Renewable Energy Authority, and the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

Meanwhile, in Mauritania, the bp Mauritania Hydrogen Project is underway with a planned capacity of 2,000 ktpa. Expected to be operational by 2027, this project is a joint venture between multinational energy company bp and the Mauritanian government, leveraging solar and wind energy sources.

Egypt is also home to the Globeleq SCZONE Hydrogen Project Phase 2, with a capacity of 1,945 ktpa, projected to be operational by 2028. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with partners like the British International Investment, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and others, aims to deploy significant electrolyzer and renewable energy capacities.

In Mauritania, the Aman Hydrogen Project is advancing, with a capacity of 1,700 ktpa. This endeavor, in collaboration with renewable energy developer CWP Global and the Mauritanian government, is expected to harness wind and solar energy to produce substantial amounts of green hydrogen by 2030.

Moving to Mozambique, the Jearrard Energy Mozambique Hydrogen Project, owned by renewable energy company Jearrard Energy Resources, is set to be operational in 2027. With a capacity of 1,500 ktpa, this project underscores the continent’s commitment to leveraging solar energy for sustainable hydrogen production.

South Africa is also joining the green hydrogen revolution with the Jearrard Energy Northern Cape Hydrogen Project. This venture, slated for 2027, aims to harness solar energy for hydrogen production, demonstrating the country’s dedication to renewable energy initiatives.

Mauritania’s Infinity Power Conjuncta Nouakchott Hydrogen Project Phase 2, with a capacity of 1,363 ktpa, is making strides toward becoming operational by 2030. Through partnerships with Conjuncta GmbH, Infinity Power, and Mubadala Investment Company, this project signifies a significant step towards sustainable energy development.

In Mauritania, the Project Nour Green Hydrogen Plant is capitalizing on the region’s wind and solar potential to facilitate cost-effective hydrogen production. With a capacity of 1,200 ktpa and partnerships with Chariot, Eren Groupe, and TotalEnergies, this project aims to commence operations by 2030.

Morocco’s White Dunes Hydrogen Project, slated for 2028, will have a capacity of 1,136 ktpa. Jointly owned by Falcon Capital and Hydrogene de France, this venture underscores Morocco’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Finally, the CWP AMAN Hydrogen Project in Morocco, with a capacity of 900 ktpa, is progressing towards commissioning in 2028. Owned by CWP Global, this project exemplifies the continent’s diverse approaches to green hydrogen production.
