Toshiba’s Gas-Insulated Transformers Enhance Power Safety in Makkah

The recent installation of seven gas-insulated transformers (GIT) by Toshiba Energy Systems and Solutions Corporation marks a significant milestone for the Haram 2 and Haram 3 substations in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

Commissioned by Saudi Electricity Company, this project aims to modernize critical urban infrastructure serving millions and aligns with the country’s Vision 2030.

By replacing oil-insulated transformers with GITs for 110 kV-class substations, the goal is to provide a safer and more reliable power supply.

Makkah welcomes millions of pilgrims annually, necessitating a secure and dependable infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted power throughout the year.

Gas-insulated transformers, chosen for their superior safety features, are non-flammable and explosion-proof, addressing major concerns for substations in a large city. In 2020, Toshiba was selected for this project due to its proven technical expertise and product reliability.

Toshiba, with a strong track record of GIT sales in Japan, East Asia, North America, and Europe, achieves its first order for the Gulf States. The company’s focus on product safety and reliability significantly enhances substation safety and performance, bringing lasting benefits to Makkah, its residents, and pilgrims.

The significance of this installation cannot be understated. Toshiba’s gas-insulated transformers are engineered to offer a robust solution to the challenges of urban energy supply.

Beyond reducing fire and explosion risks, these transformers minimize maintenance requirements, crucial in a dynamic city like Makkah. Their compact size and ability to operate in harsh environments make them ideal for critical infrastructure.

This initiative is part of a series of technological upgrades adopted by Saudi Electricity Company to modernize the Saudi power grid.
