$7 Billion Tram Contract Awarded to Consortium for Melbourne’s Extensive Network

Transdev and John Holland have formed a consortium to secure a $6.8 billion contract to operate Melbourne’s tram network for the next nine years.

This landmark agreement grants the consortium the responsibility of managing the world’s largest tram network.

The consortium will be entrusted with overseeing a vast network comprising 500 trams, 1,600 tram stops, 24 routes, and over 250 kilometers of double track. This extensive network plays a vital role in Melbourne’s transportation system.

Starting on December 1, 2024, Transdev and John Holland will operate under the familiar Yarra Trams brand. They are committed to progressively introducing improvements to services and enhancing the overall customer experience.

Transdev brings extensive experience in operating large-scale networks across 19 locations worldwide, including France and Spain. John Holland, on the other hand, specializes in light rail operations across Australia and is already part of the consortium managing Victoria’s metropolitan train network. Together, they also operate Region 9 buses in Sydney.

The new contract prioritizes performance, with stringent benchmarks and increased monitoring of both day and night services. This approach ensures accountability for delivering reliable and efficient tram services, optimizing the utilization of trams for specific routes.

The agreement includes the introduction of more accessible next-generation trams, replacing older high-floor fleets. This initiative will further modernize Melbourne’s transport network, particularly in anticipation of the Metro Tunnel’s opening in 2025.

Throughout the contract period, new technology will be implemented to provide passengers with more consistent and real-time information. This includes updates on alternative transport options during disruptions and tailored information for blind and low vision passengers through large text and text-to-speech features.

Frontline staff will receive additional training to better assist passengers with specific needs, including those from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. This commitment to inclusivity aims to enhance the overall passenger experience.

In a pioneering move for a Victorian public transport franchise, the Transdev John Holland consortium will establish board gender parity from the outset.

Additionally, they will set targets to boost employment opportunities for women, Victorian First Peoples, the long-term unemployed, young people, and individuals with disabilities.

Melbourne’s tram network facilitates over 147 million passenger trips annually, complementing the city’s sophisticated integrated road and rail network. This new contract aims to ensure that trams continue to play a crucial role in efficiently transporting Victorians.

Victorian Minister for Public and Active Transport, Gabrielle Williams, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Transdev and John Holland, emphasizing the commitment to modernizing and improving the passenger experience on Melbourne’s iconic tram network.
