If asked to guess the most American-made car, many would likely name a Ford, Chevrolet, or Dodge. However, the Cars.com American-Made Index reveals a surprising result: the Tesla Model Y holds the top spot for the third consecutive year, demonstrating Tesla’s dominance in domestic production.
Volkswagen’s Unexpected Success
Even more astonishing is the Volkswagen ID.4 securing the third position in 2024. This achievement by a non-American car company is particularly noteworthy. It highlights the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which incentivizes automakers to use U.S.-produced batteries and supports domestic battery mineral mining, cell production, and pack assembly.
Electric Vehicles Dominate the Top 10
The 2024 index features four electric vehicles in the top 10: Tesla Model Y (#1), Volkswagen ID.4 (#3), Tesla Model S (#4), and Tesla Model X (#9). Tesla’s consistent presence in the top rankings solidifies its position as the most American car company. With the Tesla Model 3 Long Range now qualifying for the full $7500 U.S. EV tax credit due to U.S.-made batteries, it is expected to join the top 10 in 2025.
Honda’s Strong Showing and Future Contenders
Apart from Tesla, Honda is the only other brand with three models in the top 10, securing the second, fifth, and sixth positions. The anticipation builds for which electric vehicles will make the list next, especially with the Model 3 likely joining the top ranks. Currently, the Ford F-150 Lightning ranks highest among other EVs at #56.
Growing Influence of Electric Vehicles
Despite holding less than 10% of the U.S. auto market in terms of sales, electric cars occupy 40% of the top 10 spots in the American-Made Index, primarily due to Tesla’s strong performance. This trend indicates the increasing significance of electric vehicles in the American automotive landscape.
