Western Australian public schools are poised to benefit from the fourth round of the State Government’s Schools Clean Energy Technology Fund, as announced by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti.
This program aims to reduce energy costs and improve energy efficiency in schools by implementing clean energy solutions such as solar panels and other energy-saving technologies.
Focus on Solar and LED Lighting Upgrades
The current funding round will specifically target the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and the upgrade to light-emitting diode (LED) lighting.
Building on Previous Success
This initiative builds on the achievements of previous rounds, where a total of 240 schools have already received upgrades.
The first round saw 84 schools equipped with solar panels, the second round provided solar installations for another 96 schools, and the third round focused on LED lighting upgrades for 60 schools.
Alignment with Climate Policy and Existing Programs
This program aligns with the Western Australian Climate Policy and complements existing initiatives like the Solar Schools Program and Synergy’s Virtual Power Plant Program.
Educational Benefits
Beyond energy savings and environmental benefits, the program also seeks to provide STEM learning opportunities for students and teachers.
It aims to equip them with new skills and knowledge about the advantages of renewable energy and technologies.
Ministerial Statements
Education Minister Dr Tony Buti expressed his satisfaction with the program’s expansion, stating, “I am pleased that additional WA public schools will be able to reduce their energy use as part of this program. Clean energy solutions are an important investment, and we continue to provide these opportunities for schools to lower the impact on the environment and help students understand the benefits of renewable energy and technologies.”
Energy Minister Reece Whitby also underscored the significance of the program, noting, “This is an important program that allows many of our schools to run off cheaper, cleaner, and more efficient energy sources. It will also make the local electricity grid more stable and reliable and assist in our transition towards a cleaner energy future.”
Commitment to Renewable Energy
The Schools Clean Energy Technology Fund, with a budget of $44.6 million, showcases the government’s commitment to renewable electricity and its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
