Walmart Canada Incorporates Hydrogen-Powered Semi-Truck into Fleet

Walmart Canada has announced the addition of a cleaner, more sustainable vehicle to its transportation fleet with the integration of a hydrogen fuel cell truck.

The introduction of the hydrogen fuel cell semi-truck, currently operating in Mississauga, Ontario, is part of a comprehensive strategy to decarbonize the company’s fleet. Although it is a single truck for now, the move signifies a commitment to transitioning towards a 100% alternatively powered fleet.

The vehicle, manufactured by Nikola, is a Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Class 8 truck with an impressive range of approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles).

This hydrogen-powered vehicle operates without producing carbon emissions, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. According to the retailer, utilizing this truck will help prevent an average of 97 metric tons of carbon emissions annually.

The adoption of this hydrogen fuel cell truck represents a significant advancement in the capabilities of Walmart Canada’s long-haul transportation. Until now, the company’s zero-emission fleet relied solely on electric vehicles with considerably shorter ranges.

The semi-truck was supplied by ITD Industries, based in Etobicoke, Ontario, and will be used for long-haul journeys within the Canadian province.

Gonzalo Gebara, CEO and President of Walmart Canada, expressed pride in this milestone, stating, “We are proud to introduce Walmart Canada’s first hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle as a significant step towards becoming a regenerative company. This is a first for a retailer in Canada and exemplifies our commitment to pushing boundaries, embracing new technology, and driving change within the industry.”

This pioneering use of a hydrogen fuel cell truck by Walmart Canada is the result of a collaboration between the retailer and Nikola.

Steve Girsky, CEO and President of Nikola, emphasized the alignment between the two companies, saying, “This collaboration with Walmart Canada, a brand dedicated to a more sustainable future, perfectly aligns with our mission to foster innovation and environmental responsibility in the transportation industry.”
