Western Australia’s Energy Boost: Investing in local manufacturing

Western Australia’s energy manufacturing sector is gearing up for a significant leap forward with a hefty $26.4 million injection from the state government, all aimed at bolstering local employment opportunities.

This investment zeroes in on locally-made clean energy components, with a spotlight on Standalone Power Systems (SPS) and wind turbine manufacturing.

In the upcoming 2024-25 State Budget, a whopping $18.4 million is earmarked to unleash an additional 50 locally-crafted SPS across regional WA.

SPS, these off-grid power solutions blending solar panels, battery storage, and backup generation, are set to deliver cost-effective, dependable power to customers located at the edge of the network.

This bold move builds upon the triumph of the 56 SPS units already set in motion since 2021. Not only have these units ushered in cleaner, more affordable, and reliable energy, but they’ve also paved the way for the removal of approximately 184 kilometres of overhead powerlines in regional areas.

The fresh injection of funds will herald the installation of 50 new SPS units across Esperance and the Mid-West region, all proudly crafted on home soil in WA.

Furthermore, a generous $8 million will be channeled towards bolstering local businesses in the manufacturing of wind turbine components. This move capitalizes on the state’s rich wind resources and the surging demand for renewable energy.

WA Premier Roger Cook underscores the paramount importance of ensuring every Western Australian reaps the rewards of the energy transition. “Our investment means it’s local businesses building the parts we need to become a renewable energy powerhouse,” Cook affirms.

WA Energy Minister Reece Whitby emphasizes the pivotal role of SPS in WA’s journey towards decarbonization. He notes that this investment will ensure regional Western Australians have access to clean, affordable, and dependable power.

WA Minister Assisting the Minister for State and Industry Development, Jobs, and Trade Stephen Dawson shines a light on the government’s unwavering commitment to local jobs and future-proofing the economy.

Western Australia’s Energy Boost: Investing in “By empowering WA businesses to engage in wind energy supply chains, we’re championing local jobs and laying the groundwork for our economic future,” Dawson asserts.
