World Bank Grants $298 Million to Togo for Development Projects

LOMÉ, July 12 (AFP) – The World Bank has committed $298 million to finance three significant projects in Togo, as confirmed through agreements signed on Friday in Lomé, an AFP journalist reported.

The first agreement, valued at $200 million, aims to fund the “Inclusive Development Through Electricity Access Project.”

“This project is timely, given the energy challenges our sub-region currently faces, which also affect our country,” emphasized Economy and Finance Minister Sani Yaya during a press conference.

“It will help strengthen the electricity supply… enabling over 1.5 million people to gain better access to electricity, primarily in rural areas,” he added.

The second agreement, amounting to $75 million, will finance the “Public Sector Strengthening Program for Service Delivery.”

This program will contribute to improving human resource management, public finances, and the quality of services provided to the population.

The third agreement, totaling $23 million, focuses on supporting the “Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion Project (COSO).” It will provide additional assistance to refugees, displaced persons, and host communities in northern Togo.

The World Bank’s portfolio in Togo has seen remarkable growth in recent years, increasing from $295 million in 2017 to $1.21 billion in 2024.
