Yara Unveils Europe’s Largest Renewable Hydrogen Plant

Yara International, a global leader in fertilizer production, has reached a significant milestone in decarbonizing its food value chain.

The company has inaugurated a new 24-megawatt (MW) renewable hydrogen plant in Porsgrunn, Norway, currently the largest in operation in Europe.

This state-of-the-art facility utilizes water electrolysis and renewable energy to produce green hydrogen, eliminating 41,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually at the site.

Svein Tore Holsether, CEO of Yara, hails this as a “major milestone for Yara and for the decarbonation of the food value chain, maritime fuels, and other energy-intensive industries.”

Yara has already begun delivering the first batches of fertilizer produced using renewable ammonia from this new site.

These low-carbon fertilizers, marketed under the “Yara Climate Choice” brand, will benefit crops while reducing their environmental impact.

In addition to green hydrogen, Yara is also investing in carbon capture and storage to produce low-carbon ammonia.

The company recently signed an agreement to reduce emissions by 800,000 tons per year at its ammonia production site in the Netherlands and is evaluating similar projects in the United States.

Holsether emphasizes that the green transition requires substantial investments, a predictable framework, the deployment of renewable energy, and continuous technological advancements.

He asserts that Yara is well-positioned to deliver decarbonized solutions rapidly and at scale.

With its pioneering green hydrogen plant and ongoing carbon capture projects, Yara is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable food production. The company is not only feeding the world but also actively working to protect the planet.
