The town of Zyrardów in Poland has taken a significant step towards realizing its geothermal heating goals with the completion of a deep geothermal well.
Initial results indicate promising prospects for the development of a geothermal heating network.
Geothermal Well Delivers Promising Results
The recently completed geothermal well in Zyrardów has successfully tapped into a geothermal resource at a depth of 2680 meters. The resource boasts a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius and can sustain a flow rate of approximately 160 cubic meters per hour. The well’s location within the coal yard of municipal company PEC Zyrardów is strategically advantageous for future utilization.
Government Funding and Future Plans
Drilling operations in Zyrardów commenced in January 2024, supported by a PLN 19.8 million subsidy from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. This funding was secured under the “Making thermal waters available in Poland” program, demonstrating the government’s commitment to promoting geothermal energy development.
Ambitious Expansion of Geothermal Facilities
Following the success of the initial well, the local government has announced its intention to seek further subsidies to facilitate the expansion of geothermal facilities in Zyrardów. Mayor Lucjan Krzysztof Chrzanowski expressed the town’s determination to continue exploring and developing geothermal energy, highlighting the potential for both heating and recreational applications.
Geothermal Heating and Beyond
The completion of this geothermal well marks a crucial milestone in Zyrardów’s pursuit of sustainable and renewable energy sources. The town’s ambitious plans for geothermal heating not only promise to reduce reliance on fossil fuels but also offer the potential for broader environmental and economic benefits.
