Root-Power Chooses Canadian Solar for Inaugural Energy Storage Project

Root-Power, launched in July 2024 with the backing of the YLEM Group, has selected e-STORAGE, a global energy storage specialist and part of Canadian Solar, to provide battery solutions for Coryton Energy Park in Corringham, Essex.

This partnership will contribute 22 MWh of storage capacity to the UK’s electricity grid, with completion anticipated in early 2025.

This project is the first in Root-Power’s extensive pipeline exceeding 1 GWh, which they aim to develop over the next three to four years.

Root-Power’s Coryton project will utilize Canadian Solar’s SolBank 3.0, a cutting-edge energy storage solution.

SolBank 3.0 boasts high-density lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells, an active balancing battery management system (BMS), and an innovative liquid cooling thermal management system (TMS).

This advanced technology is certified under UL standards for safety and performance.

Neil Brooks, Managing Director of Root-Power, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating: “We eagerly anticipate working with e-STORAGE to bolster the UK’s grid at Coryton Energy Park, as part of our ambition to add 150 MW of storage capacity to our portfolio in 2024 and 2025.

Following a comprehensive procurement process, we selected the e-STORAGE product based on Canadian Solar’s proven track record in delivering these systems, as well as their strong commitment to ESG and ethical supply chain practices.

“As the UK progresses toward decarbonization, battery storage sites like the one at Coryton will be indispensable for storing renewable energy on days with less wind or sunshine. We are dedicated to contributing to a greener, more sustainable future and expanding the UK’s renewable energy landscape.”

Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, also expressed excitement about the project: “We are thrilled to announce another project in the UK, providing our new SolBank 3.0 technology to Coryton for our partners at Root-Power. At e-STORAGE, we take pride in being a trusted partner in the nation’s transition to clean energy.”
