Dutch Geothermal Research Advances with Ultra-Low Emission Microgrid from Aggreko

A geothermal research initiative in the Netherlands has been able to maintain its vital research towards the energy transition through the implementation of an ultra-low emission microgrid provided by global energy solutions provider, Aggreko.

The project, led by Dutch-state backed Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN), is centered on investigating several onshore wells to determine their suitability for geothermal energy extraction.

If successful, it has the potential to provide a dependable and consistent source of low-carbon and renewable heat independent of weather conditions.

EBN required a solution that could deliver up to 2600 kW peak power for its drilling rig while adhering to rigorous emissions targets exceeding the Dutch government’s stringent regulations.

Conventional temporary power options fell short of these requirements, jeopardizing the project’s continuation.

Aggreko, a specialist in power and temperature control, presented multiple emissions reduction alternatives for EBN’s evaluation.

The chosen microgrid solution incorporated Aggreko’s cutting-edge PowerMX2 twin engine Stage V generator in a load-on-demand configuration, coupled with a battery.

This setup provided the necessary peak power for the drill while minimizing emissions during lower loads or when the rig was idle.

In addition to meeting EBN’s targets, the sustainable Aggreko solution achieved a notable reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions of up to 90%.

Siebe Viersen, Senior Drilling Supervisor at EBN, expressed his excitement about the project’s potential to assess geothermal heat possibilities and contribute to heating homes and buildings in the Netherlands sustainably.

He highlighted Aggreko’s shared commitment to sustainability as a valuable partner in this research endeavor.

Loesje van Dongen, Sector Account Specialist at Aggreko, emphasized the reliability and sustainability of geothermal energy compared to weather-dependent renewables like solar and wind.

He underscored Aggreko’s dedication to supporting the energy transition through its sustainability framework, Energising Change, which enables regions and organizations to accelerate their journey towards a renewable energy future.
