FortisBC Pioneers Automatic Renewable Natural Gas Blend in North America

FortisBC Energy Inc. (FortisBC) has achieved a significant milestone as the first energy utility in North America to automatically designate one percent of its customers’ gas as Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) starting July 1, 2024.

This initiative, approved by the British Columbia Utilities Commission, marks a significant step towards a more sustainable energy future.

Doug Slater, Vice President of Indigenous Relations and Regulatory Affairs at FortisBC, emphasized the importance of this move in addressing climate change and facilitating an affordable energy transition.

He stated, “The gas system is undergoing a transition as we work to increase the supply of renewable and low-carbon gases, like RNG, to lower emissions, and this new RNG blend offering will help us do that.”

For the average residential customer, this change will have no immediate impact on their monthly bill. The one percent RNG blend will be incorporated into the storage and transport line item, and customers will receive a carbon tax credit (biomethane credit) for the RNG portion.

However, as the RNG blend increases over time, future bill adjustments are possible.

FortisBC’s existing voluntary RNG program will remain available, allowing customers to designate up to 100 percent of their gas usage as RNG, including the new one percent blend. Over 13,000 B.C. homes and businesses already participate in this program.

Businesses like Martini Film Studios and municipalities like the City of Burnaby have embraced RNG for its environmental and economic advantages. RNG enables them to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support local economies without requiring expensive equipment upgrades.

The gas system plays a crucial role in meeting British Columbians’ energy needs safely, reliably, and affordably. Increasing the amount of RNG in the system aligns with the provincial government’s CleanBC Roadmap to 2030 for decarbonizing the economy.

FortisBC remains committed to developing renewable and low-carbon gas options, including RNG, to contribute to B.C.’s climate goals, maintain affordability, and provide choices for consumers and businesses.
