Kano Emerges as a Major Startup Hub in Nigeria

Kano, the commercial heart of northern Nigeria, has made its debut in the top 1,000 global startup cities.

In recent years, it has witnessed a surge in startup activity, driven by the achievements of tech pioneers and a vibrant tech community.

In 2016, a group of four young individuals established one of Kano’s first tech incubation hubs, Startup Kano. This initiative, born out of a desire to participate in the national tech revolution, has evolved into the foundation of Kano’s tech ecosystem. It has supported over 50,000 young people and facilitated over $1 million in funding for tech-enabled businesses.

Kano’s tech ecosystem differs significantly from those in Lagos or Enugu. According to Aisha Tofa, co-founder of Startup Kano, initial challenges included a lack of tech awareness and skepticism towards investing in technology over traditional businesses. Overcoming these obstacles involved years of dedicated tech evangelism.

Kano’s tech scene has grown to become one of Nigeria’s top six ecosystems, boasting the highest number of startups in the north. Factors contributing to this growth include the inspiring success of northern entrepreneurs and a shift in mindset among local investors. However, funding remains a significant hurdle for many startups in the region.

While funding is essential, Tofa emphasizes the need to address foundational challenges like education, mentorship, and market development. She highlights a disconnect between current training methods and the desired impact, advocating for tailored approaches that align with Kano’s unique context.

Another co-founder of Startup Kano underscores the importance of adapting to Kano’s cultural landscape. By framing tech startups as an extension of traditional businesses, entrepreneurs can better connect with local investors and customers. The focus should be on generating revenue from customers, mirroring established business practices in the region.

Kano’s tech ecosystem has seen considerable progress, with more startups, incubation hubs, investors, and overall interest. The co-founder notes that building a startup in Kano is now easier than it was four years ago, thanks to increased resources and support from various organizations.

While acknowledging the positive momentum, Ahmed Idris, founder of Enovate Labs, a non-profit promoting innovation, cautions against overstating the changes. He emphasizes that the ecosystem remains relatively small but acknowledges the remarkable achievements of some individuals and startups. Continued effort and support are crucial for sustained growth in Kano’s tech scene.
